Time will tell if our NEMT late summer barbecue turns out to be a fore-runner for an NEMT 25th Anniversary celebration in 2005. In any case, with one thing and another - not least of which was our Secretary Alistair Beeley and last Chairman, Roger Owen heading off for a late summer climbing adventure in Bolivia - our promotional barbecue had to be put off until the second half of September.
The successful event, which was held at the hospitable Westburn Lounge, demonstrated the constant need to promote what NEMT does and stands for. Let's not forget Coca-Cola is not a leading brand for nothing - people can only be interested in what we do if they hear about us! Yes, it turned out to be a dreich night however we were very well catered for by the helpful staff in the Westburn's comfortable indoor function suite.
It is excellent to be able to report that as a result of the well attended event we secured, at long last, a replacement Lecture Co-ordinator to relieve Maureen Stuchbury after 16 consecutive, excellent seasons of lectures and an Advertising Co-ordinator for Mountain Views. We also met several local Clubs we never knew about and who never knew about NEMT and what we stand for. Discussions are underway to take things further, hopefully to our mutual benefit! After a run through the development and current standing of NEMT it was a pleasure to have the always inspirational Drennan Watson share his thoughts with us on the future of the Cairngorms and beyond. He reminded us that out of this man made log jam of consultations, designations and planning regulations we must try and focus on a vision of what we actually want on the land itself - and so work back from there. It was also very encouraging to hear Drennan mention that in his role as new Convenor of the Save the Cairngorms Campaign he hopes to stay a little more in touch with what NEMT is Up to. 1 would also like to mention that Drennan brought along a fine mountain view 2005 calendar and card which we all were pleased to sign to let our last but one NEMT Chairman, Bill Brooker, know that we were thinking about him.
And, on the subject of 2005 - any suggestions?
Jennifer A Cook, NEMT Chairwoman
