Mountain Biking in Sensitive Areas

Dave Windle

In the previous issue, we reproduced data from Strava showing how people are mountain biking across the very sensitive Cairngorm plateau. We showed this data to the CNPA, who dismissed it.

We aren't wanting to imply that all mountain biking causes damage. There are many trails in the Ballater area well-used by mountain bikers that are well constructed and maintained and are not being damaged. Similarly, there are many trails running through commercial forests, often owned by FLS, where mountain bikers do no harm. We also agree that walkers' boots cause erosion. However, the bearing pressure under a boot is considerably less than under a bike tyre and consequently causes less damage.

However, we believe that mountain biking should be discouraged on sensitive soils.

WE NEED YOU to take pictures of damage caused by mountain bikers on sensitive high mountain soils. Once damaged these soils, repair very slowly. If you're out and about on high mountain areas and see damage caused by mountain biking, please take some photographs and send them in to us.

We know that it's happening, but we need evidence. Can you help us?
